My latest musical clutter (Indigo Dave Corner of Creation)
« on: January 26, 2018, 12:54:22 pm »
Been fooling with this for maybe a couple of weeks. Writing a little bit at a time. There are long sustained chords which extends the time.  I'm pretty sure I can't play solos over these harmonies - most of the harmonies are using (and needing) 2 hands.  I'll have to come up with some scheme for soloing.  Wish I was a lyricist.

It'a real interesting piece Dave. Definitely Jazz....

Dinkleberg might be interested in playing over this...Well....Really....I guess I'm wishing he'd be interested in playing on it....Seems right up his alley...

This is a practice recording of Dear Prudence. I may use this groove and general feel for doing a YouTube video of this song.

Hey AJ, before you pull the plug. I'm practicing for maybe doing a YouTube video of "Over The Rainbow".  Just tonight I tried doing a Billy Eckstine (1940's era)  warble vibrato.  If I can do it consistently thru the whole song I'll record it like this.

I'm not pulling the plug Dave....I reconsidered.....it's not hurting anything to leave the place up and open...

I'll listen to your latest offering a little later tonight... :)

Listened tonight Dave.....Great arrangement...Really great arrangement...Lively, playful piano work...Fun approach vocally, and I can hear delight in your vocal as well. I highly encourage you adding this to your set list for your next gig...Wherever that may be.

Thanks for listening AJ.  I am going to practice it some more and hopefully record video for YouTube in the next few days.

Regarding keeping the forum open, do what you feel you want to do.  You are not obligated to us (the forumites) in any way.  This whole thing has been a gesture of generosity on your part.  We live in some amazing times. All this amazing technology and at the same time so many people living in bubbles of ignorance and tribalism.  Interesting times.

I know this is no one here's cup of tea.  But AJ will check it out.  I think I'm hearing a bit of distortion at certain points. See what you think AJ.  If need be I'll redo it.  There's not fancy editing, just restart after restart when I make a sonic wart - sonic fart ?

I'm not hearing any distortion really. But I'm hearing some...Bumps? like maybe something hitting whatever is holding the microphone you're recording the piece with.

How did you record this? As much detail as you have. I'm assuming you just have one or more mikes placed. Did you record into Presonus or...Well just tell me how you done it Dave.

Your singing is really improving and you seem to have real confidence....Cool.

I actually like your version better than Eric Clapton's, but you're a stronger singer than he is.

The video AND audio are being recorded with a Sony HDR-MV1.  It's as fueking simple as it can be.  It has little X/Y configured mics (can't remember the other cool feature about the mics).  But there is a Power button and and ON/OFF button.  No zoom or focus or nothing. There is a menu you can drill down to. But I just get a friend to  start it  and I start playing. If I'm lucky enough to make it thru till the end of the song, I pause and my friend hits the ON/OFF button again.   If I were hitting the button myself there'd be that annoying before and after shot of me starting/stopping the camera and sitting down/standing up.   I would want to snip the beginning and end of the video.  But don't know how.  I opened up my Roxio Creator NXT 5 software and opened some video editing software. But got a message about my video resolution needing to be set higher.  But is is.  So I dunno.

May need to redo Over The Rainbow.

Regarding the singing, I'm experimenting.  Sometimes experiments fail, sometimes not.  But this could be one way of singing, among other ways.  You know what a character actor is.  Well I've thought that there could be a character writer or a character singer.  One could try to write with Bert Bacharach in mind as a model. Or Neil Young.  Or try modeling after a singer. Or maybe try combining traits from 2 different singers.  Whatever.

But I'm kind of thinking of that Billy Eckstine style from the 1940's.  Thanks for listening AJ.  I also did "ACouplaEllingtons" .  I'll share that later on.

Listening to it I again, I'm wondering if the mics are clipping.

Possible.....Y'know....I've said this before...But I'd really like for you to try to record a little cleaner. I know you are all about the organic approach...But try recording with your keyboard audio outs going into your audio interface to Pre Sonus, or into your tascam multitrack workstation...In other words ...Eschew recording the piano from the speakers. Clamp on some headphones and just a mic for your vocals. That will eliminate the clacking of the keyboard, and singing directly into the mic will capture your vocals and the dynamics so much better......Plus you'll then have an opportunity to fine tune your mix...some eq maybe some compression.....

But I've suggested this before ..Lol...So I ...Lol..really don't expect you to change....And perhaps you shouldn't

I seem to prefer recording thru the air over the antiseptic direct in thing.  I've often said that I'm not a perfectionist,  I'm a pragmatist.  Whatever that means in this particular case.  But then, positioning the mic to best advantage becomes critical.  There's the rub.

This is the 2 Ellington songs:  "Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me"  and  "Prelude To A Kiss"
