Mine eyes ! They're blinded.
« on: June 13, 2018, 03:22:48 pm »
I've heard that variety is the best policy in the spices of life.  Or something like that.

Hey AJ.  I'm working on PreSonus Studio One. Haven't cranked it up for a few months. So now I'm having to uninstall, delete some folders, and  delete something in the Registry Editor.  It's annoying pain in the ass ****, but I'm accepting that if I want to use something like this with its quirks, I'd best embrace it. That means develop a familiarity with the general stuff.  So I'm starting a file (paper) folder with notes I make - this is so I won't have to reinvent the wheel.

I'm visiting the PreSonus forms.  Getting advice. It's humbling. Sometimes the guys offering technical advice get testy with a neophyte's sloppiness. In my case I didn't read the instructions carefully enough and didn't delete the Roaming folder.  Now I've deleted it and everything else. Did a complete shutdown and started up again (not Restart !).  And Studio One is still not opening - it stalls out at "Starting Midi Engine".   I'll maybe end up with tech support.

I'll keep you posted.

I have zero experience with PreSonus. Have you tried asking any questions at HC? I know Craig Anderton is real familar with it and if I remember correctly, Mark Longworth did his whole last album with PreSonus. Might be worth a visit to The Asylum to ask him for some knowledge. I'm assuming it's still open. Haven't even checked in over 6 months now.

This problem doesn't seem to fall in the realm of one piece of sage advice.  It seems to more tedious.  I'm going to try the advice from PreSonus forumites for a while longer, then if no success I'm try PreSonus tech support.  This is the bullshit that some people complain about with the USB recording interfaces.   But I want to be able to do edits from the computer.

It is tedious to the point of pain actually. I'm talking digital recording generally here. Makes me wish for simpler times when I could actually splice tape together. I feel though, that the more you dig into it, the tasks will get simpler with familiarity.

That's what I've been told anyway. You're a smart guy, with a computer background so I'm sure you'll get the "AHA!" moment before long.

Thanks for your vote of confidence.  I opened a PreSonus support ticket.  The slings and arrows of using technology.  As a lifelong musician, I just prefer to musish.  But if I want to use this stuff, I have to work thru these problems.

I don't think I mentioned another issue.  I bought an HP version of the MS Surface Pro tablet. I guess you'd call it a clone.   Then I purchased an app called StaffPad.  It allows you to notate music with your stylus and (theoretically) changes your hand/stylus notation to engraved styled notation.  Of course it doesn't work as well as the YouTube demos.

I wish I'd taken the time to learn how to read and write music. I admire those that can. Perhaps if and when I retire I'll dig into that...Well...I say that...  But I probably won't...Lol....

What would be cool would be to some day have a guitar with a hex pickup. There are programs where what you played on the guitar could be transferred into notation. I actually have done that with my little Akai keyboard. It's just taking Midi information and transcribing it. Kinda cool.

Wanted to talk more.....But...I'm on call and just got another call while I was typing this.

Well if you take up a music study, I'll be able to assist if I can at any time.  I don't know everything but I know some things.

Did I tell you I joined a little chess group. We meed at a church. I told em I'm an out of the closet atheist - when someone brought up Sunday school.

Ha! I bet that sent their game off a bit!

And don't sell yourself short on musical knowledge...I think you're a veritable fount of standard musical knowledge. If I were to do what you suggested, you'd be my go to guy to be sure..

HeyJ,  I finally got my PreSonus Studio 26  launching.  I should say, the tech support guy got it up and launching.  I'm going to play around with it.  My 1st goal is to record some percussion parts I can use to play along with on the piano.

Will keep you posted.

A resource that's free is called "Looperman". It has a veritable cornocopia of FREE downloadable percussion loops.

Thanks for the heads up. I don't want to go down that path though.   I know it's common standard procedure with many. But using prerecorded loops reminds me too much of those  Lowrey organs I used to see a guy play in the entrance way of the mall piano/organ store.

No prerecorded loops for me.  They sound antiseptic to me.

Am I miss remembering, or did I see a trap set in one of the pics you posted of your play space?

There's an odd combination of percussion along with a metal Yamaha snare. And a cymbal on a stand. With a couple of mounted cabasas. And I can't recall whatever else.

Anyway I just found in the manual (an online manual - seems pretty well done) "Loop Recording on Audio Tracks".  I gotta force myself to be wonky and dig in and embrace all the wonky details.  And I gotta learn the (is it the ?) hotkeys. The combinations that keep you from having to screw with the mouse.

I discovered there are tutorial Studio One videos by a guy named Joe Gilder.  YouTube. So I'm starting to watch (ep 1).  I want to learn how to edit. There're little wonky details.  Setting up a beginning and ending loop point is the first thing I want to learn.

You should play with your loops.  It might be a way to sort of play with a small band. Sorta kinda. Actually, to tell the truth, watching Jacob Collier groove with his own created loops got me motivated to try it.  But I can use the PreSonus w S1 as a looper.  Anyhoo...
